CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) - A northwest Indiana county may pay as much as $8.25 million to settle more than eight lawsuits against county employees that allege misconduct and negligence led to several injuries and deaths.
The Lake County Council received a list of cases Thursday that a county attorney recommended they settle to avoid trail and the possibility of greater damages.
Two of the lawsuits involve 39-year-old inmate Gregory Smith of Hobart and 39-year-old inmate Adekunle Odumabo of Lansing, Illinois, who died in county jail. Documents say the two cases could cost the county almost $5 million.
The other lawsuits involve charges of police brutality, improper search and seizure, unlawful arrest and improper medical care.
The council will have a public hearing on the bond proposal in December.
