Peoria Police: ISP controls release of names in officer-involved shooting

Posted: Updated:
PEORIA, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

Control over the release of the names of the six officers in an officer-involved fatal shooting in Peoria last month rests with the Illinois State Police.

Police Capt. Loren Marion told the city's Advisory Committee on Police Community Relations Thursday that the Peoria Police Department will release the names of the six officers involved in the shooting after receiving authorization from the Illinois State Police. State police are leading the investigation.

Russell was killed by officers following a standoff on September 20, hours after he allegedly robbed a bank. Thus far, the names of the officers have not been released. All six officers involved are on administrative leave pending the investigation's outcome.

Correction: An earlier version of this article said the Illinois State Police will release the names of the six officers. That is inaccurate. The Peoria Police Department will release the names of the officers upon receiving authorization from the Illinois State Police. We regret the error.
