More local volunteers headed to the Southwest for hurricane relief duty. Nearly a dozen Salvation Army volunteers from Illinois, Iowa and Indiana boarded a flight at the Peoria airport for Houston, Texas Thursday morning. After they arrive they'll go to Beaumont to help provide assistance to hurricane victims and support staff.
"Just naturally when something like this happens you just have the inkling to want to help and wanna be part of helping those that are in need," said Salvation Army Volunteer Verna Witham.
The group spent two weeks in training preparing for the upcoming job. One Salvation Army spokesperson says with back to back hurricanes in Texas and Florida, volunteers could be assigned to disaster relief for two years or longer.
