DECATUR, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

A former Decatur city councilman is making a run for retiring state Rep. Bill Mitchell's seat.

Dan Caulkins, a Republican, said he would not take a salary, health benefits or a pension if he is elected.

“There’s an old saying about government. If you give them a dollar today, they will spend it and expect $2 tomorrow. We need representatives in Springfield who are willing to fight for our interests and curb the insatiable spending habits of state government. We cannot tax our way out of this mess; families throughout Central Illinois are seeing their tax bills increase to serve the interests of the political class. We need independent reformers who will address the government spending spree,” said Caulkins during his campaign announcement at the Decatur Civic Center.

The 101st District Caulkins is vying to represent includes parts of McLean County.
