PEKIN, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

A 20-year-old Morton man has pleaded not guilty to abusing an 18-month-old girl, including banging her head against a wall multiple times and breaking her femur.

Kahlus Adams made the plea during an arraignment Thursday in Tazewell County Court. As previously reported, Adams was taking care of his toddler niece last month when he allegedly began to beat her when she wouldn't stop crying. A prosecutor's affidavit said he threw a sippy cup at the child's face, swung her around and hit her head against a wall at least four times, and twisted her leg until it broke.

The child was in a local hospital for several days. She was recently released, but her family said she will need to wear a leg brace and relearn how to walk.

Adams is currently out of jail on $10,000 bond. He is set to appear in court October 16 for a preliminary hearing.
