NORMAL, Ill. (HOI) -- -

A group of local immigration activists are rallying in Uptown Normal Tuesday in support of illegal immigrants protected by DACA.

DACA, also known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, protects children who entered the country illegally before age 16 from deportation. There are an estimated 83,000 "Dreamers" protected by the Obama-era policy in Illinois alone, and more than 800,000 nationally.

In a morning statement to the press, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the Trump administration will roll back DACA. A six-month delay will give Congress time to pass a legislative solution should it choose.

Illinois Peoples Action is holding a "Defend DACA" rally at Uptown Normal Circle at 4 p.m. Tuesday in response to the announcement.

“These children and young adults were told by our government if they followed rules, stayed in school and out of trouble they would not have to live in fear of deportation.  Today Trump said he will break that promise” said Sonny Garcia, board member of Illinois Peoples Action in a press release.  “No child should live in fear of being taken from their community.  They are our neighbors, students, soldiers and workers totally integrated into the only nation they know.  We demand our central Illinois members of Congress, Republican and Democrat alike immediately pass legislation protecting them” said Garcia.

DACA has supporters on both sides of the aisle on Capitol Hill, though many Republicans have called for it to end.
