McLean County is the latest Central Illinois county to report a case of the west nile virus.
On Monday, the McLean County Health Department announced a mosquito pool collected in the 61705 zip code on August 1st, tested positive for the virus.
The 61705 zip code covers the Bloomington, Downs, and Gillum area.
The disease is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites. Symptoms usually include headache, fever, and body aches. Serious symptoms like encephalitis, meningitis and death are also possible. People over age 50 are at highest risk for the disease.
It is recommended to avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are active, or wearing bug spray if you are.
