After being forced to travel to Peoria, Pekin or the Twin Cities just to catch a movie, soon Canton residents will have an option closer to home... much closer.
The Spoon River Partnership for Economic Development plans to reopen the old Garden Theater by March of next year. That location on the square hasn't featured an actual movie since the summer of 2014. Now it's getting new life thanks to Eisentraut Theatres who will both renovate and manage the property.
"We're hoping that will keep people in town spending money at restaurants and other local business establishments that go well with the theater-going experience," explains Missy Towery.
When the project is completed the newly renovated first-run movie theater will have two screens. Eisentraut Theatres has five other locations in Illinois and Iowa.
