School staff goes door to door to improve attendance
PEORIA, Ill. (WEEK) -- -
Many Peoria Public schools staff members have been going door to door in attempts to improve student attendance.
The "Because We Care" campaign, which launched last year, started again today. Teachers and staff went to the homes of incoming freshmen who missed several days last year to encourage parents to make sure their kids are on time and at school..especially during the first two weeks of classes.
"Brett Elliot, Richwoods' Principal said, "Often times over the phone you may not reach them but if you get them face to face you make a connection with the student." Vicki Lavick, mom of a Richwoods student said, "I don't think I realized how many days she had taken off total between being sick and doctors and dentists appointments and that type of thing. So we will definitely make more of an effort to do that outside of school."
The campaign will be followed up with a "Check and Connect" program which involves staff members doing daily check ins on students during the school year.
