Want to head to Carbondale for the eclipse, but don't want the hassle of trying to find an available hotel room at the last minute? Amtrak may be the option for you.
The "Amtrak Eclipse Express" will offer rides to Carbondale from Chicago or Champaign on August 21. A $153 ticket from Chicago or a $90 ticket in Champaign will take you to southern Illinois, where the total eclipse will be visible.
The train will depart Champaign at 5:05 a.m., for those who opt to make that trip from the Peoria or Bloomington-Normal areas. The train is set to arrive in Carbondale around 8:30 a.m. and depart at 5:15 p.m. to return to Champaign just before 8 p.m.
Amtrak customers can get a discounted ticket to enjoy Eclipse Day at Southern Illinois University's Saluki Stadium by buying online.
