PEORIA, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

Interim Peoria County Sheriff Brian Asbell will soon make his job title official.

Peoria County Board Chairman Andrew Rand said the selection committee to fill the seat vacated by former sheriff Mike McCoy chose Asbell to serve. Asbell is the former superintendent of the Peoria County Jail.

"Mr. Asbell's distinguished law enforcement career and commitment to Peoria County are just two of the many reasons that the committee believes he is the correct choice." said Rand.

The appointment will be brought to the full county board for approval on August 10. The Peoria County Sheriff oversees more than 175 employees who provide law enforcement for unincorporated Peoria County, the jail and the courthouse.
