A fire at the LanXess plant in Mapelton this afternoon forced an evacuation.
The fire happened around 2 pm when aluminum alkaline caught fire at the chemical manufacturing plant.
The Peoria County Sheriff's Office said you cannot put this out with water so the fire department had to use a retardant to extinguish the flames.
They had to stick around to make sure no chemical reactions occurred after the fire was extinguished.
Ed Mereand, the site manager of plant next door, "Evonik" tells us they evacuated around 100 of their employees just as a precaution.
