This week's temperatures are living up to the term "dog days of summer," and too often we forget important aspects of staying safe when mother nature cranks up the heat.
Brandon Stear takes a walk on the Rock Island Greenway once every other week.
He said the heat doesn't stop him; but, when temperatures go up he's prepared.
"I make sure to full up the water before I head out and have it handy," said Stear.
He says if he's not carrying it with him, he has it where he can quickly get to it because of the importance of staying hydrated.
Experts say water is the best choice during hot and humid conditions.
They say it's best to avoid liquids that contain caffeine, alcohol or large amounts of sugar because they can cause you to actually lose more body fluids.
In addition to staying hydrated, many other precautions were put on a list of summer heat safety tips by the Peoria Health Department.
First and foremost on the list -- limiting outdoor activities, especially during the hottest part of the day.
Also on the list suggestions like wearing hats and light-colored, lightweight, loose clothing.
Avoiding vigorous physical activities in hot and humid weather, and taking frequent breaks also made the list.
While the hot, humid weather lingers, don't forget to keep track of your pets and check in on elderly neighbors.
Also, suppose you don't have air conditioning, or your unit tears up, you're covered with cooling centers in the area.
"Cooling centers are in my experience not as utilized as they could be," said Grant Allen of Heart of Illinois 211.
Cooling centers in Peoria include the Peoria Police Department (24/7), the fire stations in Peoria (7 am to 9 pm), and the City Link lobby downtown.
