Five people are dead after a freight train hit their van in christian county Wednesday night.
All five of the victims are in their 70's and 80's.
Illinois state police say the 79 year old driver failed to yield to the oncoming train.
The crossing was marked without lights or crossing arms.
State police added that while storms did pass through the area, it was clear at the time of the crash.
This was a Union Pacific Train. They released a statement to us saying they extend their condolences to the family and friends of all involved.
While Amtrak was not involved in this accident.
They did release some warning tips this morning on how to stay safe at a cross way.
Don't walk, bike, or jog on a railroad track.
Obey all warning signs and signals.
Trains can come from either direction on the same track at any time and can be very quiet.
Trains are wider than the tracks. Anyone too close can be hit by or dragged under the train.
Never drive around lowered gates it's illegal and deadly and there are substantial fines if you're caught.
