PEORIA, Ill (HOI) -- -

A Mapleton man was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for receiving and possessing child pornography.

Richard Sills, 61, pleaded guilty to the charges in January. His house was searched by federal agents in 2016 after investigators learned he had been downloading child porn through a peer-to-peer file sharing program. Sills told federal agents he had been doing so since the 1990s.

Agents said they seized Sills' computer equipment. An examination revealed 1,322 images and 73 videos of minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct. The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation.

Sills will remain on supervised release for 10 years after serving his sentence, and must also register as a sex offender.
