The Tazewell County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a phone scam going around.
A person calls and tells the victim a family member is in jail, needing funds to bond them out or pay for a lawyer. The caller asks for payments to be wired or to send prepaid cards to pay for the fees.
The sheriff's office recommends confirming the location and identity of the family member and then hanging up on the caller without giving them information. If you are unable to contact the family member allegedly in jail, the sheriff's office recommends contacting the police agency where the family member is reportedly held.
