URBANA, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

A University of Illinois student believed to have set himself on fire atop the performing arts center's rooftop has been identified.

The Champaign County Coroner said 21-year-old Westley Banks of Gurnee was pronounced dead early Wednesday following the incident on the U of I's Champaign-Urbana campus.

Police responded to a call shortly before 3 a.m. of a fire atop the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. It is believed Banks was dead when officers arrived on the scene.

“By all accounts, Westley was hard-working, personable and an enthusiastic student,” said U. of I. Police Chief Jeff Christensen. “We are deeply saddened any time harm comes to one of our campus community members. Our thoughts and sympathies right now are with Westley’s family, friends, classmates, coworkers and anyone else affected by this tragedy.”

Anyone in need of counseling on the campus can always call the crisis line at (217) 359-4141 or 911. The incident is still under investigation.
