A program to help empower young girls is running through the Heart of Illinois,
"Girls on the Run" is an after-school program for girls in grades three, four, and five.
While training for a 5K, the girls also form a sisterhood, and learn skills that may make them joyful, healthy, and friendly even with girls they'd never noticed before.
We talk about things that can make us be a better person like how can we feel for each other and how can we make sure we always have comfortable feelings going, and not like down in the dumps," said 3rd grader Lacy Hefter.
This year, 675 girls are participating in the "On the Run" program throughout the heart of Illinois.
