Former police chief challenges incumbent in Washington mayoral race

WASHINGTON, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

Longtime Washington Mayor Gary Manier faces a challenge from the city's former police chief.

Don Volk is running against Manier in the city's Republican primary. No Democrats have filed for the race, meaning the winner of the primary will effectively become the city's next mayor.

Manier is seeking his fifth term as mayor. The incumbent has said the 2013 Washington tornado put some of the plans he had for the city on hold. He is a Caterpillar retiree.

Volk retired from the Washington Police Department after 31 years there, including three as chief.
