Rivian Automotive is a company building electric cars with self driving features.
Although they don't have a car yet, they've gone through three products and have built and tested prototypes.
If they do land in Normal, Rivian will add up to 500 jobs by 2021-- eventually totaling in 1,000 jobs.
At the meeting, council voted yes to give Rivian a property tax abatement for five years.
"A long way to go before producing the first car. hopefully in five years they'll be producing more cars...that's what we hope," says, Mark Peterson.
"Our motives and objective are purely aligned. We want to be successful and bring an strong economic base to the area. We may differ in our potential success but our intentions are aligned," says, R.J. Scaringe, CEO of Rivian Automotive.
These five hundred plus jobs will be high paying positions that will start at $50,000 a year.
The grant money will help go towards plant improvements.
