You Gotta Eat: June Bugs Diner

You Gotta Eat: June Bugs Diner

EAST PEORIA, Ill. -- It's pretty hard to miss June Bugs Diner in East Peoria.

That's June on the sign, in her fluorescent yellow vest -- a nod to her longtime career as a construction worker.

"My husband had that sign made," said June Underwood. "That explains why it's got the vest and the stop sign. It's nice to think that he still thinks I look like that."

June left construction shortly after she opened the diner four years ago. And her customers are glad she did.

June Bugs is a classic hometown eatery. One of those places where friends gather to enjoy each others' company and a good plate of comfort food.

But June had to be talked into it by her husband, Scott, who grew up in the apartment upstairs.

"Years back his dad owned this building and it was a motorcycle shop. He was interested in it," said Underwood.

Everything here is homemade including the desserts. They serve breakfast all day. In fact, their most popular meal is something called the Hay Stack.

It's potatoes topped with sausage, onions, peppers, homemade gravy and two eggs. It was big enough for two and couldn't have tasted better.

After seeing the dessert tray I treated myself to a generous slice of coconut cream pie.

My meal, before tax and tip, was $12.95.

June Bugs Diner is located at 800 Meadow Ave. and is open every day from 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The food is delicious and the staff is friendly.
