MORTON, Ill. -- The Morton restaurant formerly known as Maxine's re-opened last month under new ownership.
From outside, Kemp 208 Main Street Grille in Morton doesn't look like a restaurant. Go inside and it almost feels like you've been invited to dinner party by a friend.
“My goal when we bought this was to make people feel like this was my home and they felt comfortable and they could come in and have dinner in a very comfortable atmosphere having some awesome food," said Cathy Kemp.
Owner Cathy Kemp refers to it as casual fine dining. Chef Jeff Madden and his staff prepare everything from burgers and paninis to steaks, pasta and seafood.
“We make everything from scratch, our dressings, everything we have,” said Kempf.
And they serve at least a dozen different wines. The house itself dates back to 1918 and was most recently home to Maxine's.
Since reopening in October as Kemp 208 Main Street Grille, they now also serve lunch. That's when I was there. I ordered one of the specials, the Main Street Duo, half a sandwich and soup.
I had the turkey panini on delicious sourdough bread, topped with cheddar cheese, cranberries and lettuce.
By the way, the cranberries really do something for the sandwich. The soup was a creamy butternut squash. For dessert I had a chocolate crème brulee -- sort of a creamy pudding with a crystallized sugar shell on top. A real treat.
My bill before tip was just over $20.
Kemp 208 Main Street Grille in Morton is located at 208 North Main Street. The staff is friendly and the food is excellent.
