You Gotta Eat: American Grille

BARTONVILLE, Ill. -- A Bartonville restaurant known for its classic American comfort food celebrates its first anniversary next month.

At the top of the hill on Garfield Avenue in Bartonville is American Grille.

Owner Kim Newburn opened the place last December with a goal to serve food that makes customers feel right at home.

“We focus on all home cooking, we make almost everything from scratch, we want to have meals that you'd get at your grandma's house,” said Kim Newburn.

This is Kim's second American Grille location. She's been operating the original one in Canton for nine years. So she know what customers want.

"You'll see a lot of to go boxes walking out the door here because we serve a nice portion of food," said Newburn.

At dinner time those to go boxes are often filled with fried chicken and catfish -- two of biggest sellers here. They also serve breakfast all day and feature a number of daily specials.

The atmosphere in the dining room is cozy and the staff is extremely friendly.

I went with one of the newest items on the menu, a sandwich called the Cuban. For $7.99 its loaded with ham, barbecued pork, melted swiss cheese, pickles and a special sauce. It was very tasty and came with giant waffle fries smothered in cheese and bacon bits. I topped off my lunch with a slice of their to-die-for chocolate mint pie.

With a soft drink my bill before tip was $14 and change.

American Grille in Bartonville opens every day at 6 a.m. They have live country music on Tuesday nights but you've got to get there early. You won't be disappointed.
