PEORIA HEIGHTS, Ill. -- Peoria Pizza Works in Peoria Heights is one the area's oldest and most popular pizza parlors.
In fact, it was recently selected by our viewers as the 2015 winner of Pizza Wars, conducted by CINewsNow.com.
The restaurant opened back in 1972 as the area's first deep dish pizza place. And over the years there have been other firsts here too.
"Being one of the first we did have a lot of my first-time customers that had dates here (or had their) their first date here. I hear that all the time," said owner Gary Besler.
What you won't hear are customers leaving hungry. The portions are huge.
"I don't skimp. We make the dough three or four times a day, so it's always fresh. We use a real true mozzarella," Besler said.
This wasn't my first trip to Peoria Pizza Works so I knew what I wouldn't be disappointed.
I ordered a 10-inch, deep dish, Upper Crust pie with sausage for $11.95. The tomato sauce was sweet and the cheese fresh. One slice was more than enough for me and it was delicious. A whole pie easily feed two or more people.
I topped it off with a skillet cookie for dessert, a real treat.
With a soft drink my bill before tip was just over $23.
Peoria Pizza Works is at 3921 North Prospect and opens every day at 11 a.m. And if you like thin pizza, they have that too.
