WEST PEORIA, Ill. -- Country Club BBQ opened a year ago on Farmington Road in West Peoria. Clay Doblestein, a former Peoria city golf champ, wanted to open a barbecue place that didn't fit the mold.
“I wanted to make it more pub style, more sandwich oriented and do some different takes on it. We do our barbecue quesadillas, we do barbecue wraps,” said Dobelstein.
And so far the response has been good. You can still order the traditional barbecue fare, but some of the creations here are a delicious experiment that appears to have hit the sweet spot.
"You can tell when people are being genuine about how much they really, really enjoy the food," he said.
I'm told the wings here are top notch. Clay's even concocted his own special barbecue sauce he calls Blueberry Moonshine. The key ingredient is a restaurant secret.
Their unconventional approach to barbecue made it more of an experience for me.
I ordered the Deep Fried Combo BBQ Wrap: it's brisket, pork and homemade coleslaw all stuffed in a crunchy shell. One bite and I knew I'd found something I'll have again. Mixing in the coleslaw creates a tasty combination of flavor.
With a soft drink, my bill before tip was just over $12.
Country Club BBQ is open every day from 11 a.m. until 2 a.m. It's a family restaurant where you can enjoy a beer, watch the game and maybe even play one too.
I enjoyed my visit there, and I'll be going back.
