PEKIN, Ill. -- One of the first things you notice about Ming's of Pekin is the variety. An all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet, Ming's serves all of the classic favorites and even offers a full sushi bar.
"Everything is about fresh in Chinese food. It has to be freshly prepared, freshly cooked," said Tom Wang, the owner of Ming's. "If you were ever to go to China you wouldn't find anything that's frozen."
Wang opened Ming's three years ago. He calls the General Tso's chicken the restaurant's most popular item but he's partial to the seafood casserole.
Whatever you like they've probably got it. And according to the regulars I talked to, the price is right.
"We eat here on average about once a week," said Susie Stiles of Mapleton. "Seniors can come here and eat for less than what it cost to go to McDonald's or Hardee's or the fast food restaurants."
And those places don't have a hibachi grill. You can have your meal authentically prepared.
I was lucky enough to have Tom personally cook up my lunch on the hibachi - a delicious plate of pineapple chicken on a bed of noodles.
While he was working on that I ran through the buffet line and picked up some General Tso's chicken, fried rice, broccoli and mushrooms. It was all fresh and delicious.
Did I mention its all-you can-eat?
For dessert I topped off my meal with a slice of pecan pie.
Add a soft drink for a buck and my meal was just over 9 dollars before tip.
Ming's of Pekin is located at 2129 Court Street and opens every day at 11 am.
If you have a big appetite and you like Chinese food this is a must stop.
