PEKIN, Ill. -- Right next to Heritage Farmers Market, just off Route 9 between Pekin and Tremont, is a charming little place called the Black Angus Café.
It's a throwback to a simpler time when the food on the menu came straight from the neighbor's farm.
"We're a small farm-to-table café in the middle of two cornfields," said Vickie White, who owns the restaurant and does all the cooking. "We do all fresh angus beef, fresh pork, fresh eggs. Everything is local."
That means if you order eggs the hen probably produced them that same day. And if you're having beef it probably came from Elm Grove Farm right there in Pekin.
"We're trying to mimic the old general stores of yesteryear as a place to come in and gather and trade stories," said Doug Sassman of Elm Grove Farm.
Yu're always welcome to a cup of coffee, on the house, whether you order a meal or not.
But you might find its hard to resist Vickie White's home cooking or a slice of Mama Sassman's strawberry pie and blackberry cobbler.
Vickie's specialty is her meatloaf and she's extremely proud of it. It was the daily special when I was there and I watched so many other diners enjoying it that I had to give it a try. It was almost two inches thick and big enough for two. Seasoned perfectly and delicious.
It came with mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans with stuffed sausage and a potato roll. A hearty meal for a big appetite.
I saved room for a slice of chocolate cream pie. Can't beat that.
With a soft drink my meal was $12.49 before tip.
Black Angus Café is located at 20235 Route 9 on the edge of Pekin and is open Monday through Friday from 11 am- 2 pm and om Saturday from 8 am to 3 pm. The restaurant is not open on Sunday.
