CANTON, Ill. -- Billy's Tap on Elm Street in Canton first opened more than 80 years ago. The locals swear by the food here, particularly the burgers.
“On Wednesday's we do a build-your-own burger type night so you can put anything you can think of on your burger,” said Ashley Harper.
But when Billy Brotz first opened the place, there were no burgers. In fact, there wasn't even a menu. It was just a bar.
That bar still graces Billy's, although they moved from the original location on the square.
“My grandfather had the opportunity to move down here and purchased this building,” said Harper.
Four years ago they added a kitchen and now serve lunch Monday through Saturday. They don't serve dinner here, except on Wednesday night when they have some of their biggest crowds.
That's when they have a build-you-own-burger and flat bread pizza night.
I got to sample that when I built my own burger -- a half-pound of beef, topped with provolone and Swiss cheese, bacon, pineapple, tomato and mayo and served on a pretzel bun. It was big enough for two and the fries were fat and potatoey.
With a soft drink my bill before tip was an even $10. Billy's Tap in Canton opens every day at 11 a.m. The food is delicious, the staff is friendly and the atmosphere is a bit like going back in time.
