Firefighters aim to 'Keep The Wreath Red' this holiday

Posted: Updated:
PEORIA, Ill. (WEEK) -- -

The Peoria Fire Department is adorning its 12 stations with Christmas wreaths, but it's not all about holiday spirit.

Keep The Wreath Red is a state-wide program designed to promote safety around the holidays.

Every time there is a fire in Peoria, a red bulb will be replaced with a white bulb.

It's a prevention effort that's crucial, as Fire Chief Phillip Maclin says house fires triple in winter months.

"If you are utilizing a live Christmas tree, you have to water it," said Maclin.

"Keep it away from any type of egress. Keep it away from heating sources. Never use candles on a live Christmas tree, and keep it watered properly."

He also says you should be careful not to use more strands of Christmas lights than the manufacturer recommends, and always keep an eye on your portable space heaters.
