YOU GOTTA EAT: They say good things come in small packages.
That's especially true here, at the Hungry Moose. The small, homey dining area can fit maybe a couple dozen people, but the amount of food you get for the price is a steal.
"Everything is moose portion, says owner Chad Zike. “We had some people, when we first took over who were worried about quantity over quality, which is not true. We are quantity with quality.”
Zike bought the restaurant back in January, and has made sure to stick with the country themed setting and friendly atmosphere.
One thing that has changed, the hours of operation, due to high demand.
"The breakfast is the big hit,” Zike says. “People like breakfast for dinner. We just opened in the evenings up until 8 on Wednesday through Saturday and it has really gone over well."
And the breakfast is exactly what I went with. I ordered the moose scrambler. That's scrambled eggs mixed with hashbrowns, bacon, ham, tomatoes, green pepper, onion and lots of cheese. It was a little intimidating at first, but tasted amazing. And never one to shy away from a challenge.. I did indeed eat the whole thing.
Photographer Larry Foulk took on an even bigger challenge, ordering the fan favorite, the pork tenderloin, which is at least twice the size of the bun.
Didn't stop Larry from devouring the whole thing, though.
We were pretty satisfied with ourselves for cleaning our plates, but the real champion is anyone who actually has room for a piece of pie, which they also offer everyone who comes in.
Our two meals plus drinks came to 20 dollars and 51 cents before tip.
The Hungry Moose is located at 4808 West Farmington Road in Peoria.
It's open 6 am to 2 pm Sunday through Tuesday, and 6 am to 8 pm Wednesday through Saturday.
