You Gotta Eat- Kelly's Bakery and Café

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Like many great restaurants, Kelly's Bakery and Café started out small. So small, in fact, it wasn't really a restaurant.

Kelly Mathy had a knack for baking, and people could not get enough.

"We kept getting more and more cookie orders, and we knew we couldn't keep doing it in our 110-year-old house anymore," said Kelly's husband, Jamie Mathy, who also serves as owner of the restaurant.

Kelly, a full-time teacher, arrives before sun-up nearly every day to prepare baked goods for the bistro style café that bears her name before heading off to her day job.

Husband Jamie handles the business side of the downtown eatery.

He calls it Bloomington's answer to the french café.

The menu is chock full of tasty sandwiches, soups, and salads, but return visitors have claimed the "twisted turkey" as their sandwich of choice.

It is easy to see why it's a fan favorite. The jalapeno jelly is just a little spicy with a hint of raspberry flavor, and is unlike anything you will find anywhere else.

For desert, I opted for the Carmalita bar. It is so rich with chocolate and caramel that I had to save half of it for later.

All in all, Kelly's Bakery and Café is a charming and tasty choice.

The total before tip came to $10.84.

The restaurant is located at 113 North Center street in Bloomington.

It is open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
