You Gotta Eat - Midnight Espresso

PEORIA, Ill. -- This coffee house and café isn't one to show off, but the menu speaks for itself.

Midnight Espresso, a small coffee house located off the beaten path, is easy to pass by.

But, once you try it, you are probably going to be a customer for life.

"We've kind of tucked ourselves in as a hidden gem here in Peoria," said owner Chris Monroe.

It is a gem with a surprising amount of sparkle. Open for about three years, it has a distinct 'city' vibe.

"We use the wood and the metal to make it a little more urban, and to match the coffee and the culture we wanted to create here," Monroe said.

The culture may feel urban, but the menu is far from it.

All the ingredients are purchased from local farmers and made fresh every day.

As for one-of-a-kind beverages you cannot find at your average coffee chain, look no further.

"All the syrups are from scratch," said Monroe.

"Right now, the signature is our huckleberry lemongrass."

I gave the signature drink a shot and was not disappointed.

The sweet and smooth flavor was enough to satisfy even the pickiest of coffee connoisseurs.

I also tried the pistachio and blackberry hand pie. It was kind of like a gourmet pop tart.

And finally, I had the biscuit sandwich made with fried green tomatoes and buttermilk dressing.

For an extra buck, I got a freshly cooked egg thrown on top.

Photographer Larry Foulk tucked into an english muffin sandwich.

That's made with pork sausage, eggs and spinach.

We took our time at Midnight Espresso, and you will probably want to, as well.

Midnight Espresso is located at 3461 North Meadowbrook Road in Peoria, near the Uftring Weston Chevrolet Cadillac.

It is open Tuesday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
