CHARLESTON, Ill. (AP) - A public defender has been appointed for a Charleston woman facing a first-degree murder charge in the death of her 2-year-old son. The (Charleston) Times-Courier and Mattoon Journal-Gazette report that Savannah M. Weiss made her first court appearance Monday and requested an attorney. Authorities allege the 22-year-old left the child unattended in a playpen for three days and awoke to find the child unresponsive.

PONTIAC, Ill. (AP) - A central Illinois jury has awarded $5.2 million to a nurse who claims she was fired from a nursing home after reporting alleged abuse. The (Bloomington) Pantagraph reports that Katrina Wesemann worked a licensed practical nurse at a Dwight facility in 2012 when she was fired. A spokesman for the nursing home, Bloomington-based Heritage Enterprises Inc., says company officials are "deeply disappointed" in the verdict and continue to dispute the allegations.

CHICAGO (AP) - A defense attorney for a former Chicago area school superintendent facing federal fraud charges says federal prosecutors have turned over 400,000 pages of records. Prosecutors say the documents include grand jury statements. The Daily Southtown reports that former Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 superintendent Lawrence Wyllie's next court hearing is Jan. 23.

CHICAGO (AP) - A Chicago committee has signed off on a $31 million settlement to four men who were each imprisoned for about 15 years for a 1994 rape and murder they didn't commit. The City Council's finance committee approved the police misconduct settlement on Monday. The settlement heads to the full City Council, which nearly always OKs police misconduct settlements brought to it for approval.
