CHICAGO (AP) - Hundreds of suburban Chicago high school students joined a nationwide protest against gun violence. Students at Oak Park-River Forest High School walked out of class on Wednesday, a protest that coincided with a march on the Florida state capitol in Tallahassee by students from Parkland, Florida. That is where 17 students were gunned down last week at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Oak Park-River Forest student Connor Hartweg called the nation's gun laws "broken."
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Five Illinois Democrats hoping for the chance to replace Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner in the fall are to square off in the state capital. A Wednesday night debate is scheduled at the University of Illinois at Springfield. It will feature candidates J.B. Pritzker, Daniel Biss, Bob Daiber, Tio Hardiman and Dr. Robert Marshall. Chris Kennedy's campaign said he couldn't participate due to a back injury. Rauner also faces a primary challenge from legislator Jeanne Ives.
CHICAGO (AP) - A growing number of Illinois Democrats are calling for an independent investigation of misconduct within longtime House Speaker Michael Madigan's political and state operations. Madigan, who's also chairman of the Democratic Party of Illinois, has dismissed two campaign workers in recent days following complaints of sexual harassment and other inappropriate behavior. Several Democratic lawmakers and candidates say they have questions about how Madigan handled the complaints.
WHEATON, Ill. (AP) - A suburban Chicago judge has found a man who spent 22 years behind bars not guilty in his retrial on charges of arson and murder in his mother-in-law's death. A DuPage County judge announced the ruling Wednesday in 62-year-old William Amor's case. Amor was released last May after a judge vacated his convictions, ruling that advances in fire science proved the description Amor gave in his confession was impossible.
