Before taking the job as the interim manager of the Cincinnati Reds Pete Mackanin called an old friend.

Former Chiefs Owner Pete Vonachen said, "He called and said hey here's what's going to happen. What do you think? I said just make sure that owner gives you a vote of confidence and that they understand that you're taking a sinking ship. You're not taking a cruise ship here."

In the 25 years Vonachen has been with the team 17 Men have managed the Club including current Pirates Manager Jim Tracy, Red Sox Bench Coach Brad Mills and Tampa Bay Boss Joe Maddon who was first.

Vonachen said, "Joe walked into my office, stuck his hand out and Said, I'm Joe Maddon, I'm your manager and I've never managed before. I stuck my hand out and said Joe I'm Pete Voanchen and I've owned a baseball team before."

Since then each has benefited from knowing Vonachen.

Vonachen said, "I kind of take them under my wing. What ever they needed. If they needed to work on the bus schedule make it a little more handy, or they need a few meals. Whatever I could do to make their life more successful here.",

So does Pete think any other former Peoria manager will get their chance in the big leagues?

Vonachen said, "Jody Davis! I almost forgot Jody. Jody is an unusual character who has a terrific sense of the game. He knows how to get along with people and there's a guy who is going to be a big league manager someday, somewhere."

And don't forget current manager Ryne Sandberg.
