Farmers aim high

Farmington coach Casey Martin, who quarterbacked the Farmers to the playoffs as a teenager, talks to some of his varsity players during practice.

They're excited about football again in Farmington.

"We have double the fans as we did when I first started here," said senior nose guard Stewart Bishop. "The intensity around here has grown a lot."

Farmington had gone a decade without a playoff appearance. But that changed last fall when Casey Martin, who once quarterbacked the Farmers, led them to their first winning season since 1997.

"When I took this job there was some pressure that I put on myself to make it back to the playoffs. I felt if we didn’t make it back to the playoffs then I hadn’t done what I should do, which is turn this program around. When we made it to the playoffs last year it was very satisfying. And to win the playoff game on top of it was icing on the cake."

Shortly before Martin returned to Farmington the Farmers went over two years without a single victory. But for all of Farmington's optimism about its suddenly competitive football team, there was some disappointment last Friday. That's because the Farmers dropped their opener with Tri-Valley by 20 points.

Martin explained to his team why it couldn't happen again.

"I told them this is like golf. We’ve used our one mulligan."

Senior lineman Heath Skaggs says the team has already put the opening night loss behind them.

"I think we can win the rest of our games coming off of this loss last week. I’d like to win the conference and be the first team to win a conference title in a long time. That would be nice."
