The third quarter resembled a NBA game as the two teams ran up and down the floor with the Commandos leading 50-47 at the end of three quarters.

Washington rallied from a five-point first quarter deficit to lead Marshall 30-29 at halftime of the 3A state semifinal.

The Commandos opened up a five point lead 22-17 at the end of the first quarter, but then held the ball for most of the second quarter due to foul trouble. Matt Roth hit the last of his four first half three point shots to grab the lead going into halftime. The Indiana-bound senior led Washington with 20 points. He is the state career record holder for three-point shots.

The Panthers fell to 26-4 and the state's second-ranked team from Chicago improved to 30-4. Washington hadn't lost in almost a month winning 16 of their last 17 games until today.

Washington last appeared in the state tournament in 1962. Marshall finished third the last two years in the old Class AA format.

The Commandos meet Chicago Simeon for the championship after the Washington Champaign Central third place game at 11:00 Saturday morning.
