The State Tennis Tournaments are this weekend in Mount Prospect...
Washington hasn't had a Girl qualify for state since Jennifer Fischer all the way back in 1983. That streak is now over.
Every year head coach Jim Witt takes the Washington Girls tennis team to Mt. Prospect to watch the State Tournament.
Washington Tennis coach Jim Witt said, "In the past years we've always taken the kids up to watch state and told them this is their goal. They want to get up to play in."
Last year Sara Ohlman went on the field trip.
Washington senior Sara Ohlman said, "It was cold, I remember that. I just saw how competitive and it looked like so much fun and just like such a great experience. I was just like I want to do this you know. So from then on I just decided I was going to do it and then worked hard over the off–season to get to a place where I could do it."
That hard work paid off and Thursday morning Sara will be the first girl from Washington to play at state in 25 years.
Witt said, "The school is very excited that we're sending someone to state tennis and sara is such a nice kid that the whole school is rooting for her. I'm hoping what she is doing hear is going to impact the younger players here, so they understand if they want to go to state they just have to put the time in and they can do whatever they want."
What makes Sara's story even more impressive is that she didn't pick up a racquet until the start of her junior year, just 14 months ago.
Ohlman said, "My dad thought I might be good at so he got me to start playing."
He was Right.
Ohlman said, "I guess so Yeah."
