For the first time in 102 years both Chicago teams are in the postseason in the same season. The White Sox won the AL Central by beating the Twins 1-0 in a tiebreaker. Meanwhile the Cubs, open the Playoffs Wednesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The 2008 Chicago Cubs have already done something no Cubs team has done in 100 years.
Win a championship of any kind two years in a row.
Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood said, "I would be surprised if there was one guy in there that knew that or that would be satisfied with that. And that's a good thing."
5 years ago Chicago was just 5 outs away...
But we all know what happened.
Wood said, "You think about every now and then about what would of happened if that goes in Moises' glove for the second out of the inning. What Happens? But that's over with and in the past."
Also in the past is last season when they had another chance.
But couldn't get past the Diamondbacks in the division series.
Wood said, "We came into the postseason last year and weren't playing our best baseball and kind of limped in and it showed. We played three games and we were sitting at home watching on TV."
Many believe this is the team that can, and will end the 100–year drought.
And that includes the players.
Cubs pitcher Ryan Dempster said, "I think you have a bunch of guys in that locker who ultimately all have the same goal. They're not playing for statistics, they're not playing for money, they're not playing for personal success. They're playing for a championship."
And what if this is the year? What would it mean to be a part of it?
Cubs infielder Mark DeRosa said, "It's one of the reasons I came here. To potently be on the team that brings a championship to the north side and like you said it would be remembered for ever. I think it would be greatest thing to happen in sports.
All you want to do as a kid is to dog pile and throw champagne on your buddies and that would be great.
But we realize that it has a much greater effect on the city."
