Golfer Beats Odds

By WEEK Sports

Many golfers say they love the game...and they mean it.
Well, Mackinaw's Kurt White just might love the game more than anyone we've ever met.

Like many average golfers, Kurt White loves the game, and is frustrated by it all at the same time.

"I've got three putters in my bag," White said.
Why is that?
"Because none of them works." (Laughs)

As you can see Kurt is not your average golfer.
The 38–year old Mackinaw man was born with one arm and one leg..

"I was born that way. It's the way God made me. I don't know any different and I guess that's a good thing."

Kurt's left leg is a prosthetic..but it was the ingenuity of his father that allowed him to first try the game when he was 10 years old.
His father engineered the clubs to fit his son, an ongoing process according to Kurt. He couldn't play baseball or basketball like the other kids...and golf was a place where the young boy felt like he belonged.

"This has been the one sport that I can get out and the way golf is played and scored, it evens the playing field from the first shot. Unfortunately I've never been on a team, but individually, it's been great for my confidence."

Kurt will tell you he's high maintenance as a playing partner. He requires someone to get his clubs and strap them to his left arm. He also needs help on tee shots. It's a lot to ask...and a lot to go through for Kurt. Just showing up and playing shows dedication and determination.

"As I've gotten older I've learned more that maybe I am a little different than other people. It took me a little while to figure that out. I want to encourage people that no matter what their hurdles are, that as long as they have a passion about what they're doing not only can they utilize what they've got to accomplish something, they can excel at it too."

White says that, like his father, he's handing down his love of the game to his sons.

I've played golf with Kurt, and he's got a better short game than most people with two arms & legs.
