Chiefs pitcher Julio Castillo made a bad situation worse and wound up spending the night in jail.
The 20 year-old Dominican righthander was arrested and charged with felony assault for his actions during a benches clearing brawl in the first inning Thursday night at Dayton after throwing a ball and hitting a fan sitting behind the Dragons dugout. Castillo must also surrender his passport.
The no holds barred fight grew from several previous incidents in the inning. Castillo hit Dayton's second batter of the game, Zach Kozart, in the head. Kozart had to leave the game because of the beaning.
Moments later Dayton's Brandon Waring hit a groundball past Castillo toward second baseman Gian Guzman. Castillo and Guzman wound up running into each other on the play and Guzman suffered a broken leg. He was taken off the field on a stretcher.
Following a 2-run double by Denis Phipps and a 2-run single by Devin Mesoraco that gave the Dragons a 4-0 lead Angel Cabrera came to bat. Cabrera had hit a walk-off homerun on Wednesday giving Dayton a 4-3 victory over the Chiefs.
Castillo hit Cabrera who angrily took first base.
On the next play, a force at second base, Cabrera went in hard on Chiefs shortstop Nate Samson. That brought out Chiefs acting manager Carmelo Martinez, who was running the club with Chiefs manager Ryne Sandberg attending this weekend's Hall of Fame inductions in Cooperstown, New York.
Martinez got into a heated argument with Dayton manager Donnie Scott and pushed Scott. That triggered both benches to empty and Castillo fired a ball toward the Dragons dugout. But he misfired and hit a fan, 44 year-old Chris McCathy, who was injured. The extent of McCarthy's injuries have not been made public but he was taken to a Dayton area hospital where he was treated and released. McCarthy would not comment.
The out of control brawl lasted 10 minutes and resulted in 15 ejections. But since that didn't leave enough players to continue the game without putting pitchers in the outfield the umpires were instructed by Midwest League President George Spelius reverse the ejections and resume play. All but Castillo were allowed to return. But Spelius plans to review video of the incident and hand down penalties.
The original ejections for Dayton were Scott, Justin Reed, Kevyn Feiner, Phipps, Mesoraco and pitchers Henry Arias, Jeremy Horst, Jeff Jeffords and Luis Montano.
Brandon Guyer, Jovan Rosa, Mario Mercedes, Cliff Andersen, Castillo and pitchers Stephen Vento, Audy Santana and Martinez were banished for the Chiefs.
When play resumed Dayton took a 5-0 before eventually holding on to post a 6-5 victory over Peoria.
According to the Dayton Daily News Castillo was held overnight in a Montgomery County jail pending a court appearance.

Pretty sad that a the hockey team in Peoria which is known to fight can restrain themselves better than some guy who has an opportunity to move up in the baseball world. Which I believe after his actions should ban him from the game completely. It is obvious that he has a temper and not a very good way of handling it. Also the "coach" for Peoria needs to have some serious repercussions also. He is suppose to set the tone for the team.
