When you watch the Olympics in a few weeks here on W–E–E–K Ogonna Nnamani of Normal hopes you're not watching a re–run.
Four years ago Nnamani and the U–S women's volleyball team lost in the
quarterfinals. This time the former U–High star is hoping for a much different
outcome.
Even after playing in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Normal's Ogonna Nnamani wasn't a lock to make the team again.
Olympian Ogonna Nnamani said, "No matter who you are or where you come from, or how many Olympics you've been to, or how many national teams you've been on it's still a challenge to make a team like this."
Nnamani has overcome many challenges to earn a spot in Beijing, including a back injury that caused her to miss the 2006 World Grand Prix.
Nnamani said, "It was tough because this quadrennial wasn't easy you know with injuries and not always feeling at my best. But lucky I was able to peak at the right time and be playing at my best."
And Nnamani is one of the best.
One of 8 returning players from the '04 games, she's still the second youngest on the team.
Nnamani said, "I get the best of both worlds. I don't have to carry the Water cooler anymore or carry the balls because I'm a veteran but I still have the chance to pick up new things from the older players."
After a disappointing loss in the quarterfinals against Brazil in Athens, Ogonna and her teammates have one thing in mind in China.
Nnamani said, "We're back for revenge; we're back for redemption. We're ready to start playing right away and really be aggressive and take advantage of the opportunity cause you only get it every four years and if you're not able to play up to your potential you have four years and possibly the rest of your life to think about it."
