Driving through War Memorial and Knoxville Avenue intersection requires plenty of patience for the next week.
The Illinois Department of Transportation is asking motorist to avoid the intersection tonight, Tuesday, Saturday and again next Monday.
Construction crews are doing final resurfacing work in the area.
Long delays are expected for motorists.
The entire intersection is being closed for several minutes at a time, leading to backups.
IDOT Construction Engineer Omer Osman said, "The difficulty of the work itself is compounded because the intersection is so wide. When we go through the intersection with the paving machine, with the asphalt in the range of 300-degrees, we have to keep traffic off of it for a little bit."
The entire four-and-a-half million-dollar project is scheduled for completion by the end of this month.
