Former Bush Administration Attorney General John Ashcroft was pressing the flesh and singing the praises of Peoria County State's Attorney candidate Darin LaHood.

LaHood is a former federal prosecutor in Las Vegas.

Ashcroft was attorney general on 9-11 and was an architect of the subsequent Patriot Act. He told the crowd at the Pere Marquette today that he'll never forget what President Bush told him the day after the terrorist attacks.

He said, "When he came back to town and he looked in my direction that next day and said 'don't ever let this happen again.' It was an admonition that I took rather personally and understood was a very, very serious charge."

The Republican LaHood is challenging incumbent Kevin Lyons for Peoria County state's attorney.

Ashcroft resigned as attorney general three years ago. He now runs a consulting group.
