Governor Says Electoral College Should Be Dropped

By Jim Garrott

Illinois is officially ready to say bye-bye, Electoral College and hello to popular vote.

Governor Rod Blagojevich signed into law a measure designed to ensure America's president is always chosen by the nation's popular vote.

It's part of a push by a California-based advocacy group to get around the Electoral College and prevent a repeat of the messy 2000 presidential race... George W. Bush versus Al Gore.

Illinois joins at least two other states in endorsing the idea.

Critics say this could force more recounts and reduce the influence of smaller states.
