Obama's Health Care Plan

Democratic presidential hopeful U.S. Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., talks with Dr. Mark Anderson while touring a cardiology research lab before speaking about his health care plan, Tuesday, May 29, 2007, at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa. Obama on Tuesday unveiled a health care plan that he contends would extend coverage to all Americans and save consumers $2,500 a year. That cost would be divvied up between businesses, consumers and the government, with much of the amount raised by repealing tax cuts to the wealthy. (AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall)

Democrat Barack Obama is touting his plan for expanded health care coverage as doing more than plans offered by his Democratic rivals. Virtually all of the major candidates for the Democratic nomination have offered universal health care plans.

Obama has routinely described them as similar, but he began focusing on the differences during his latest visit to Iowa Saturday. Obama says cost is the number one reason that millions of Americans don't have health insurance.

He says his plan will cut the cost of health insurance more than any other proposal in the race. He is distancing himself from plans that require consumers to buy health insurance, a central feature of some competing plans.
