Father Jailed, Family Says Freak Accident

By Michelle Mantel

A four-year-old East Peoria boy is dead and his father is in jail after a motorcycle crash on Saturday. Authorities say the boy's father was riding his motorcycle when he ran into his son, which led to his death. Family members say the incident was a freak accident.

Friends and family members are in tears, remembering 4-year old Ashton Wells.

"He was just perfect. He was the smartest kid in the world.
I mean he knew his ABCs He was only 4-years old. He would have been somebody," Ashton's Grandfather Terry Blanch says.

That's until Saturday afternoon when Ashton was riding his bicycle in this now empty Hundman Lumber parking lot. Authorities say his father Michael Wells was riding his motorcycle and ran into his son.

The 21 year old East Peoria man is being held at the Peoria County jail on 5 charges including aggravated reckless driving and operating a vehicle on one wheel.

Ashton's grandfather filled his backyard with Ashton's toys. He remembers memories of his grandson but he along with the rest of his family mostly believe Michael should not be in jail.

"He didn't mean to do what he did, what happened happened and he should not be sitting in jail right now," Blanch says.

Family members say they are already crushed by Ashton's death.
His grandfather tries to remember Ashton's smile as he played in the tree house he built for him. They feel now is the time for the entire family to be in mourning together.

"He don't need to be in jail, he's already suffering. He's going to suffer the rest of his life," Blanch says.

Because the life of little Ashton Wells was taken away, in what loved ones are calling a freak accident.

Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll says Ashton Wells died from multiple injuries and an autopsy is scheduled for Monday. That's also when Michael Wells is scheduled to appear in court.

GOD bless you guys at this sad time i will pray for you

I am so sorry, Michael and Holly! Neither of you deserve this. I hope they'll realize the mistake they're making by keeping you guys apart. You need to be together now more than ever! My hopes and prayers are with you all.

Thank God someone finally wisened up and let him go be where he needs to be!This poor man has already suffered and will continue to suffer until he takes his final breath. There is no pain like losing a child. That pain never ends,it is always there. If it wasn't for an election this year he wouldn't have been arrested in the first place! How horribly sad that you would put a man and his family through so much just to try to benefit yourself!

Let him be home with his family. Nothin is worse than loosing your child except mourning alone. Let him go home!

Let him out...this is ridiculous. Even if you could justify holding him, you couldnt possibly do any more to him that whats already happened. His beloved son is gone now. He needs to be with his family asap!

Just an FYI to you all, #1 thanks for the prayers~! God was listening! Michael is free to grieve with Holly Praise God!!

Ya know, our justice system is so screwed up. I'm sure this poor father did not intend to hurt his son. This was a freak accident and this young father should NOT be in jail. I'm sure he is suffering enough! I know a couple who just had a baby at osf and this poor child was born heroin addicted and is in neo-natal. Now there are the people who should be arrested because they knew they were endangering the life of their child. So lets get with it and put the right criminals in jail.

let the poor man go he already has to deal with the pain of his son's death he doesnt need the pain of being in jail for no reason. so what if he killed his son it not like he said "ashton stay here so daddy can kill you."

My prayers are with this family! My hope is that he will be allowed to go home and grieve with his family. He will forever be punished for this awful accident. He shouldn't be punished any further as it wasn't an intentional crime, rather a freak accident. I hope the Prosecutor will put politics aside and be fair.

Different than the Bradley accident? This father did not do this on purpose like the bradley prank and a night of drinking was not involved also. Everyone please remember it is KEVIN LYONS that will be pressing the charges...remember that on election day....this poor man should be home with his family mourning the tragic accident of his son.

I agree with the rest of you, the guy should be with his family right now. As a father of 3 I cant imagine what he is going through, he needs to be with family and friends right now. The county needs to be out catching real criminals. My heart goes out to the family of this dear angel Ashton he is flying high with the angels looking over your family.

Monday, Oct 6 at 1:06 PM Reader wrote ...

I agree with a couple others, charge him if you must, but please allow him to grieve with friends and family.

How is this any different then the tragic deaths of the 2 infants this weekend; you can always point the finger and place blame. This is a very sad and tragic accident and I can not imagine the pain any of these parents of these children that died this weekend must be experiencing.

Monday, Oct 6 at 12:39 PM Pekin wrote ...

The father wasn't pursuing any criminal activity. Keeping him in jail does nothing for public safety and is a waste of resources. It makes a tragic situation even more tragic by adding additional suffering to the rest of the family. Keeping him detained serves no purpose and accomplished nothing for the taxpayers or the general public. My prayers and best wishes go out to the family.

Michael and Holly need to be together to mourn the death of thier son. Its not fair they have to do it without eachother, even worse michael has to do it alone in jail. He loved that little boy, he was his world. This is something he is going to have to live with for the rest of his life. My prayers are with you guys!!!!! Let him out!!

I CAN NOT BELIEVE WHAT THIS JUDICIAL SYSTEM HAS COME TO....IF THE FATHER HAS CHARGES FINE, CHARGE HIM AND LET HIM BE WITH THIS FAMILY..YOU ARE ONLY DOING MORE DAMAGE TO THIS FAMILY BY HOLDING THE FATHER IN JAIL! GO EXAMPLE TO THE YOUNGER GENERATION...LET MIKE WELLS FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel terrible for friends and family, all of whom are in my thoughts and prayers durning this difficult time. "Gopeoriaco!", I felt the same way at first, but I feel it truly was a freak accident now. It sounds as if he took off towards the father from an opposite area and then his mother couldn't reach him in time and things went wrong from there. Either way, I'm sure they are hurting in the worst way possible.

It all probably has to do with protecting Hundman Lumber from getting sued. Charge the poor guy if you have to, but turn him loose so he can mourn the death of his son with his family. God help the sad state this country has become.

My heart goes out to this family. This was definitely a freak accident and the father should not be in jail. He already is going to suffer the rest of his life knowing that he ran over his little baby boy.

Thanks WEEK for a positive touch on this story for our family. Michael has to grieve right now without Holly and that is not fair! We all know what he did was not intentional and the police should know this as well. Sure if they have to charge him with something then do it, but why not allow him to be here where he belongs with his family to grieve the loss of his son! No one is hurting more than he and Holly! Thanks again for a true story! We don't hear that too often in the media
