Fire Reduces IGA Store to Rubble

By Syreeta Baker

The Village of Mackinaw is mourning the loss of what's being called a staple in their community.

Today flames ripped through the IGA food store leaving a majority of the building in shambles.

News 25's Syreeta Baker joins us here with the latest on the fire and how this loss has cemented the bonds between residents of the village.

Mackinaw's fire chief says flames broke out around 11 o'clock this morning. Almost ten hours later fire fighters were still on the scene working to put out the hot spots.

When the IGA store collapsed to the ground the only thing people could do was watch.

"It's not going to look right without coming around the corner and seeing the IGA for a while. And it's heartbreaking," says Patsy Tillery.

"To see it fall in the street and break up like that all we can think about is tomorrow. And think about the great memories we will have and seeing the next place built," says Noah Zehr.

The Zehr family the Owners of the IGA are not the only ones focusing on the future Mackinaw's Mayor Craig Frend says he is reaching out to his village.
Reminding residents they will get through this loss together.

"I just want to let people know that we will recover from this.
I know that we have a lot of shut INS and we have people already preparing stuff to make sure they don't have to worry about getting food or anything," says Craig Friend.

The IGA did more than supply food to this community.
The century-old building was its centerpiece. Still, owners of the IGA are keeping their setback in perspective.

"That's the one thing that matters everyone got out okay as long as they can make sure it doesn't catch on to any other business or any other houses. That's all that matters are that everyone is safe," syas Noah Zehr.

"Anytime there is a little problem or anything it just bonds them. And I'm sure most of these people up here will be looking for the Zehr family and seeing if they can help in anyway," says Patsy Tillery.

I grew up in Mackinaw and have great memories of walking or sneaking our cars from school at lunch hour to the IGA. The physical and mental hole that this loss is leaving in Mackinaw can be felt all the way to Florida!

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Zehr family and the residents of Mackinaw. The IGA was part of Mackinaw's history and it's so sad to think that it's gone. When I came home to visit, all I needed to do was go to the store and I'd see everyone at once! I'm so happy to hear that the Zehr's are looking to rebuild, because there's nothing like a hometown, family owned business! The Zehr's have done so much for the community and it's residents and my thoughts and prayers are with them!

I spent my teenage years working at the IGA as a checker. Even though I haven't lived in Mackinaw for quite a few years, my heart was hurting yesterday at the footage I saw. My prayers are with the Zehr family.

Sorry for the owner's and the town's loss. The best of luck to all of you in Mackinaw! Being a small community and not having a grocery store hurts. I live in Delavan and we finally got our store back. It will be hard for all of you, but by the comments left, there is a lot of support and that is what is needed. Good luck to you all. Be there for each other.

So sad to hear about this- I grew up in Mackinaw and I feel as if I have lost a family member or something special. In fact, the IGA was the first place I drove to by myself after receiving my driver's license. My heart sank when I heard the news from my family back in Mackinaw. I live in DC, so just know that there are people everywhere with you in their thoughts and prayers! God Bless you all! Phil 4:13

This is an oppurtunity to grow the IGA into something more, and better the community, in many ways. Things happen for a reason, many times unfortunate things but they also lead to many new beginings. I wish the Zehr family luck and look forward to seeing the new establishment, and a new beginning in Mackinaw history.

They're wonderful people and I hope that this tragedy will turn into a promising new chapter for them and the community. Our hearts and prayers are with them all!

This is so sad. The Zehr family has been so generous and an integral part of the Mackinaw community. I am so thankful that they are planning to rebuild. So many of our young people start their working careers in the IGA. I am sure the Zehr family will have plenty of support from the community.
