Manual Overcrowding

By Denise Jackson

After years of declining enrollment and poor student achievement, overcrowding becomes a bit of a problem for students at the newly restructured Manual High School this year.
While school officials say it's a good problem one parent is upset because her son may be left out.
News 25's Denise Jackson has the details.

There are fewer ninth graders at Manual High School this year,
And Lekeela Yates son Raymond might not even make enrollment.
Yates says he and more than two–dozen other students spent the first day of school sitting in the library.

"He was stuck in the library all day cause there was no room. He didn't have a classroom there was no room period. Manual had a deadline where they were only accepting 150 students, freshmen. Well I guess he wasn't included in that 150," said Yates.

"The individuals who were in the library basically walked in. We hadn't seen them before. We were making phone calls to as many parents as we could get a hold of to talk to them about the situation," said Manual Principal Dr. Sharon Kherat.

Yates says she registered her son Monday and provided his physical exam information.
Unlike in previous years students who did not pre–register will not automatically get enrolled at Manual due to restructuring limitations.
Meaning those left out, will have to attend another high school.

"I do know there are probably 30 to 40 students that enrolled at Manual that were not there yesterday so there's a chance that 4, 5, or 6 of them might have moved away," said District 150 Superintendent Ken Hinton.

Hinton says student reassignments will require some time because enrollment numbers are fluid the first few weeks of school.

That's not a lot of consolation for Lekeela Yates whose son lives few blocks from Manual.

"This is his district and I don't feel like he should have go to another school that out of his district," said Yates.

Hinton says for those students who don't get into Manual's small freshman class, the two other options would be Central or Woodruff because Richwoods is already full.

Manual's principal says there is a chance ten extra students could be added to the enrollment list.

If parents would have done what they were suppose to do there kids would be in a class instead of a library. The school is not wrong its the parents. Rules are rules and deadlines are dealines.
