August 18: Construction Brake

By Jeff Muniz

The orange barrels are back for drivers in Bartonville. Plus, there's an update on all those lane reductions on Interstate 74 in this week's Construction Brake.

Along westbound 74 in East Peoria, it's a first for this area. Crews are widening the inside shoulder and installing cable rails during the night.
The rails are being installed where the grassy median is narrow at a cost of nearly two million dollars.

"The objective is if you hit a cable rail it's supposed to deflect you back into the road instead of you crashing through the cable rails and going over to the other side," IDOT Engineer Omer Osman says.

The repainting of those peeling sign trusses should be done by next weekend. But, crews will have to close lanes on eastbound and westbound 74 from Friday night through Monday afternoon to get it done.

And, just a few weeks after the Airport Road repairs finished, work begins on another section of a popular Bartonville Street. U.S. 24 is getting resurfaced from Pfieffer to Kickapoo Creek. Expect long delays as the work begins Wednesday and won't be complete until the end of September.

Drive carefully and watch out for those orange barrels.
