Pekin Gas Leak

By Denise Jackson

A gas leak in Pekin Wednesday morning temporarily closed part of Court Street near Parkway Avenue.

Authorities say a crew was repairing a stop light that was down around 9:30 a.m. Pekin Fire Chief Chuck Lauss says a contractor was drilling at the location when he hit a gas line.

Authorities immediately evacuated two homes next to the work site and closed Court Street.

"The main concern is to make sure the area is evacuated, the distances....it's an open area we need to keep any kind of ignition source away from that leak and we did that by shutting down all traffic and making sure that there's limited amount of exposure into the leak area," said Chief Lauss.

Lauss says the street was closed for 45 minutes until crews capped the gas leak. Businesses in the area did not have to be evacuated.
